Lions in Ancient Egypt

Today I went to an "Uncovering Egypt" exhbit at my local museum and it got me thinking.  The Ancient Egyptians used to treat cats as though they were gods, lions are cats.. let's link the two!
One of the famous Egyptian gods was Sekhmet, a lioness headed goddess of war yet also of medicine in Lower Egypt. Sekhmet was often thought of at the mother of another, yet less popular lion god, Maahes.

As with many other cultures, in Ancient Egypt lions were often associated with royalty and were symbols of the Pharaoh due to their symbol strength and fierceness; attributes there Pharaoh was expected to have.

Another famous representation of lions in Ancient Egypt was the sphinx. Mythical creatures whom stood guard outside the pyramids with a lion's body and a human head.

Today it is World Lion Day! 

News from Lion Aid shows that Zambia is really getting into the spirit and having a mini parade with a truck stylized a lion! Pretty cool, the kids love it. 

Getting children excited and involved in the conservation and knowledge of lions is but one way we as humans can further  protect them. 

World Lion Day

Hello lion lovers!  
As many of you may be aware tomorrow(August 10th) is World Lion Day. Be sure to inform as many people as you can on the current risks to lion populations and what we can do to help. 

Lions have forever adorned temples, flags etc for centuries as a symbol of royalty and power. What would happen if these magnificent creatures were to disappear? Who would we turn to for our courage? Have the heart of a lion tomorrow to spread the word. 

An adult male lion's roar can be heard from 5km away, how far will your voice be heard?
